FAUVISM
Period:                                                      1900-1935
Meaning:                                                 Fauvism comes from the French "Fauve," or "wild beast."
Basic idea:                                                Vivid color, vivid brushstrokes, boldness
Other Facts:                                             Fauvism tended to lead straight into Cubism. It was a starting point for Cubist artists. 

EXPRESSIONISM
Period:                                                     1900-1935
Meaning:                                                Expressionism comes from the root word "Expression."
Basic idea:                                               Artists expressed moods and ideas within their artwork rather than portraying objects or scenes.
Other Facts:                                           It originated in Germany.

CUBISM
Period:                                                      1905-1920
Meaning:                                                 Art made with cubes

Basic Idea:                                               Fracture art into 2D geometric shapes as to enhance the 2D-ness of the paper.
Other Facts:                                            It was separated into Analytic and Synthetic Cubism. 


FUTURISM
Period:                                                     1905-1920
Meaning:                                                 Root word "Future" for the futuristic inventions of the industrial revolutions
Basic Idea:                                               Celebrate technology
Other Facts:                                            The futurists were a rather violent group. 


SURREALISM
Period:                                                     1917-1950
Meaning:                                                Above realism, think "removed" 
Basic Idea:                                               Superior reality of the subconscious mind
Other Facts:                                           Surrealism was founded by writers and poets. 

DADAISM
Period:                                                    1917-1950
Meaning:                                               French: hobbyhorse Romanian: yeah yeah  Hungarian: nursemaid Irish: nothing Other: baby speak
Basic Idea:                                             To challenge what art is
Other Facts:                                          The word was either chosen by stabbing a knife in a dictionary or because of its many meanings (those                                                                      above, and many more)
